During the past few years, the Western world has viewed a wave of followers develop as advocates of the Paleo-style diet. You can see many of these people online, leaving comments and speaking about Paleo articles. Perpetuated by well-known Paleo-endorsers including Loren Cordain, Robb Wolf, and Mark Sisson, Paleo has turned into quite the movement. Have you heard of the the Paleo Diet?
Same goes with the other fad diets, everyone has different views about the Paleo diet.
Paleo began during mid 70′s and was introduced by Walter L Voegtlin, a gastroenterologist. In reality, there is very little distinction between the Paleo Diet and many other low-carb diet fads which have rendered the rounds in the past decade. The only difference is that, Paleo do not reinforce eating grains-regardless of its variety.
The Thought Behind Paleo
Paleo will be based upon the simple perception that the food from stone age is much more healthier than the ones we have today. The reason being there were no health problems during those times. In reality, people from stone age were even healthier and stringer than us. In Paleo, people should not eat what the cavemen did not eat.
Check this out: Paleo.
Palaeolithic nutrition is situated around the fact that in the 10,000 years that humans have been feeding on a diet framed by the agricultural revolution, we haven’t had enough time to genetically adapt to the modern means of eating; that our bodies are more appropriate to eating in the manner that our ancestors did for hundreds of thousands of years.
Undoubtedly, its a pretty cool idea. It’s easy to get a kind of romantic attachment to eating like we “should be – the way we were “meant to eat. Actually, Paleo’s concept is quite sensible at first. However, your view will change if you try to discover more things about it.
Paleo Diet has been in the background to other famous celebrity diets. The Hollywood Diet, The Atkins diet and others. Paleo became famous because of the book, The Paleo Diet for Athletes: A Nutritional Formula for Peak Athletic Performance, which is written by Loren Cordain. I don’t know why it turned well-known but I think it is because during that time, other movement against gluten were starting out.
The situation about the two diets is not exactly something without warning. The two diets is dependant on the belief that gluten is the one causing medical problems. But this is simply not what we should be discussing. Let’s proceed to the next topic.
Loopholes in paleo Diet
Paleo educates its supporters that the human diet basically took a turn for the worst as soon as the agricultural revolution got under way around 10,000 years ago. Ever since farming was launched, the human diet centered around it. And, based on Paleo, this is the reason why were so obese today. For these people, they should eat only what the cavemen ate.
How many calories should I eat?
Especially, this means grains of all kinds, beans, potatoes, sweet potatoes, yams, and dairy are out of the question completely for the stringent Paleo Dieter. Now, if you’re believing that it doesn’t make much sense that tubers like sweet potatoes and yams have been crossed off the list – you’re right. I am talking about, these were around well before the agricultural revolution, right? Even by a Paleo gurus own logic, these tubers needs to be green-listed. It is because yams have been eaten by the Africans since that time the world started. In that case, why is it not contained in the diet?
For people who follows the Paleo diet, 35,000 years of presence of potatoes is still not enough. This can be quite complicated because Turkey is protected in the diet however, it was just brought in in Europe during the 16th century.
What concerned and shocked me by far the most is the topic of grains. Yep, a newsletter by the Oxford University Press called People, Plants, and Genes: The Story of Crops and Humanity informs us there is indeed evidence that shows the nasty gluten-containing food staple recognized only as “cereal grain has been refined and consumed by humans as early as 200,000 years ago. A far-cry from the Paleo Diets claim of 10,000 years.
This truly throws the “haven’t had lots of time to get accustomed to grains theory out the window.
Some of the inconsistencies are obviously more important than others, but they all tend to discredit the logic of the Paleo phenomenon. Nevertheless, I wanted to learn more things about Paleo after being aware of the stuffs given above.
